Letter from the Chapter Chair

Hard to believe we are close to summer’s end already! My garden did great this year and produced some of our best vegetables yet! I cannot wait for fall when we get to harvest the rest and look forward to the beautiful fall color changes here in Michigan! I hope you are all enjoying your summer too.

On to our updates….

Our next chapter meeting is coming up on August 26th, and we really hope you can join us. This will be an in-person meeting which we are combining with our other five Michigan chapters to form a regional-based meeting. We have a great speaker presenting along with having a delicious lunch. Our gracious host, Firekeepers Casino and Resort, is providing us with the space and food. This is a great opportunity for networking and reconnecting with your colleagues! If you have not already done so, please register in advance to help us keep track of all the attendees.

The Certification Accelerator Scholarship application deadline closed on July 31st. We hope those of you who were interested in pursuing your certification took advantage and applied. This year only 100 will be given away amongst all the chapters. You should be hearing more on the winners soon.

Thank you to everyone that took the time to fill out our chapter survey. We had some great responses and thoughtful feedback from you. Additionally, other chapters requested a copy to submit to their members in further support of member engagement overall. We plan to share our survey results and the winner of the all-access pass to GSX as soon as we can.

Circadian Risk has offered members to join them at Comerica Park for free access to a ball game on August 19th. They have limited seating, so be sure to register in advance. Vice-Chair Kim Deitz is working with Michael Martin who is coordinating member attendance for the event. Circadian Risk will be providing food and drinks from 6:30PM to 7:30PM and they have a block of seats in section 329. Our group can arrive at 5:30PM, on game day.

As of this writing we are still waiting to hear back on our ASIS Foundation award applications. We applied for two this year, the Communications Award and the New or Revitalized Chapter Award. Keep your fingers crossed and we will let you know as soon as we hear something.

As I mentioned before, I would look for new laws or changes to laws and other legal information to share with you. This past month I found some information that I thought may be of  interest. The content has been added to this edition's featured readings.  Be sure to check them out below.

Liaison spotlight: JORDAN LAMPTON

 Hi everyone!

I'm Jordan Lampton, the Certification Chair and Co-Newsletter Editor for our Chapter. Along with David Garey, I'm busy keeping this page up to date with chapter and ASIS news, relevant and interesting security articles, and more. If you ever find something you'd like included in the newsletter, would like to write an article for chapter members to see, or have feedback, please shoot me an email. All thoughts, ideas, and more are certainly welcomed!

As far as my role with certifications, I've been working with the Board to prepare to offer a CPP study group. This will not only be open to our chapter members, but to any ASIS member who would like to study with a group. If you are interested in joining us, please send us an email using the 'Join Study Group' action button in the Chapter News section of this page! We've also been working to offer the Certification Accelerator scholarship once again to our members, which you have seen come across your inboxes. As far as my own certification journey, I earned my APP certification last March. Once I complete my Master's degree I plan to pursue both a PSP and PCI certification, in no particular order.

Outside of my Chapter responsibilities, the rest of my professional life takes place at Michigan State University Federal Credit Union where I am a Physical Security Specialist. There I spend my time designing, implementing, and maintaining our security systems, conducting investigations, and working on multiple projects. In the time I've been at MSUFCU, our Physical Security team has grown exponentially, as have the amount of branch locations. No two days are ever the same, and for that I'm thankful!

When I'm not at work or working on chapter items, I'm probably either buried in a good book, binge watching my Netflix show of the week, or doing homework. I have four more courses to complete before I graduate with my Master's degree in Enterprise Risk Management. Once that's complete, I plan to be done with school for awhile to free up time to read the many books on my bookshelf I said I'd read, just to buy more.

If I can ever assist you with a certification or newsletter question, or anything else, please don't hesitate to reach out! You can connect with me on LinkedIn, and my email is usually linked somewhere on this news page for certification updates!

Editorial: So, You Must Make a Presentation

Written by David Garey

Summertime means vacation time, but business continues to roll on. Your go-to coworkers you rely on to make presentations to your boss are away from the office and they don’t have access to core materials needed to make the presentation. You are stuck and are on your own to create and make your own presentation. Now it is your time to rise to, or fall from, the challenge. So, let’s make this easy for you. Just follow these easy steps to a successful presentation.

Written Presentation

  • Clearly state the purpose up front! No one should have to search the document to get to the point.
  • Be organized and have a sequence: from greater to lesser, chronology, pros/cons, etc.
  • Use correct format, grammar, and spelling.
  • Include a complete background: never assume the boss knows everything about the subject.
  • Less is more: avoid jargon or obtuse language such as, “In my experience..." (meaning once), "It is believed that..." (meaning I think), and "It is generally believed that" (meaning a couple other guys think so, too)

Verbal Presentation

  • Speak up!
  • Enunciate.
  • Avoid jargon and acronyms as aforementioned.
  • Be organized and never use a script. Also, do not read view graphs or slides verbatim - it’s not story time!
  • Stay on time; be flexible and ready to cut to the bottom line.
  • Don’t make the boss ask the “perfect question” - do your best to anticipate questions and answer them before they are asked
  • You may not be the subject matter expert, so don’t make excuses for what you don’t know. State what you know and what information still needs to be developed or validated.

Once you conclude your presentation it is likely you'll receive questions, feedback, or general commentary. When this happens:

  • Never miss opportunities to keep your mouth shut!
  • Take notes when you get direction from your boss and write down exactly what he or she said.
  • “Visual” listening is important - watch body language and don’t interrupt. Remember, you shared what you knew.
  • Be anticipatory and be ready to follow-up on your boss’s direction and questions.

You have the recipe for a great presentation. Use it well and continue to build confidence. Remember there may not be enough time to make the presentation 100%, but there is always time to re-do it.
